New Year, Time to Consider a New Space

January 13, 2020

NEW YEAR,

NEW SPACE

It’s January, which means…

Whatever you want it to mean! For many, it is a time for goal setting, for getting reorganized, or for planning a new project. Personally, I have wanted to customize my home office for some time. So, I turned to Pinterest for some ideas (yes, it’s still one of our favorite places for inspiration). It didn’t disappoint!

Clear the clutter

We can become desensitized to our own clutter until we stand back and take stock. What a mess! We never intend for it to be that way, but life happens. The “miscellaneous stack” adds up–and then it can take over! A simple and satisfying solution is to purge what you don’t need anymore. If you haven’t used it in a year, it’s time for it to go. Or find a place for it in storage.

  • If it’s important, file it.
  • If it contains sensitive information but is no longer needed, shred it.
  • If it’s broken, toss it.
  • If it’s too cute to toss, but you no longer want it, send it to a friend.

Maximize your space

There may be more space in your home or office than you think. Do you have wall space you’re not using? Consider taking things in a different direction. Vertically, you could add shelves above or cabinets below. Alternatively, a more extended table would allow you to spread out horizontally. For the person who isn’t afraid of hard work or tight spaces, a “Cloffice” (or closet office) may be the answer. Here’s how one person did it.

How clever it this? Now, if you dare to attempt anything similar, you MUST send us a pic!

Something new from something old

If repurposing furniture is your thing, maybe it’s time to dust off that old piece that has been sitting in the garage and get to work. Or find someone else’s garage–sale, that is! The initial spark for this blog came from a picture of a refurbished piano. As a music enthusiast myself, I was amazed to see an old upright piano transformed into a creative workspace! A piece of glass overlaid on the black and white keys or a chalk board over the music stand are strokes of genius. The possibilities are endless, according to your tastes. The best part? You can paint it any color that fits your décor. Whatever your undertaking, the finished project is sure to be something you’ll want to proudly display or use.

Just buy it

If DIY is not for you, consider purchasing a new piece that you’ve been eyeing. If you like being active between conference calls, you may prefer a new workstation that allows you to stand up. You could also consider getting creative with book storage. Instead of a traditional one-piece bookshelf, you could try something like the corner shelf pictured above.
