How businesses maximize the e-commerce sector

April 29, 2014

The internet has made it less complicated for Americans to sell goods and services, but the e-commerce sector isn't as easy as some might think. There are so many competing websites, it can be a challenge for new business owners to enter this market.

Whether the company is targeting a business-to-business or business-to-consumer audience, both can learn from one another to maximize their presence.

On the consumer end, these organizations have greatly benefited from merchandising and digital marketing, as Practical ECommerce contributor Dale Traxler explained, while business-to-business entities are comfortable with leveraging their goods and services amongst their competitors.

In order to make the most of the internet and the e-commerce sector, business owners have to make sure all their bases are covered, where staff take the time to wholly commit to improving their customers' online experience on the marketplace or website. The World Wide Web may play a larger role in daily life, but "it's been essentially the same experience since the beginning of the internet," entrepreneur Pau Sabria told Fortune Magazine.

Companies that take the time to make their online presence known with their target audience are those that continue to thrive — without investing in a brick-and-mortar location. Here are some factors that Practical ECommerce reported are important:

  • Merchandising – Take a serious look at the inventory over time to see what additional web pages should be added to simplify a customer's visit. Examples of pages e-commerce businesses have are Frequently Asked Questions, Inquiries and  Clearance. To prevent the small staff from burning out, have the contact phone number go directly to a verifiable virtual receptionist.
  • Social media – This may not be a surprise, but managing business accounts on every major platform is a large commitment. Before investing in the cultivation of a presence, choose which websites are most relevant to your industry.

On Point Executive Center in Tampa Bay has a wide range of professional services to alleviate the burden of running a business online.
