Four tips for simplifying small business life

May 13, 2014

Small business owners can often feel smothered by the daily responsibilities of maintaining their company. Today marks the start of National Small Business Week, and the Small Business Administration, which is sponsoring the event, reminds over-extended owners to set aside some time this week to congratulate themselves on their accomplishments. The work-life balance is never easy when starting a new business, and Forbes published some helpful tips to help simplify the day-to-day life of small business owners.

  • Set calendar reminders. With so much on their plate, it is common for entrepreneurs to push off their least-favorite or most tedious tasks until the last minute. Spending a few minutes every day on these tasks instead of waiting until the end of the month can help to avoid falling behind and facing the last-minute crunch. Setting a daily reminder on your phone or computer to address these tasks can help reduce end of the month stress.
  • Go digital. A December survey conducted by Sage of 801 small U.S. businesses found that 71 percent use Microsoft Word or Excel to create invoices, and 47 percent send invoices to their client in the mail. Many entrepreneurs fret over the cost of starting a digital invoice solution, but it is proven that these solutions will save valuable overhead and allow you time to focus on other aspects of the business.
  • Switch to a virtual office. If you don't have the funds to hire a new full-time employee, but have work that you should be delegating, switch to a virtual secretary service. These professionals can handle many business aspects, such as fielding calls and managing schedules, allowing for entrepreneurs to strike a greater work-life balance.
