Finishing the Year Strong

By, Lauren Sheridan

Nov2020

We began this year with a Pinterestvision boardcalled “Seeing 2020.” After a few months, we renamed it “Keep Calm and 2020 On.” For many, loss and hardship have defined this year. For others, so many changes happened that it barely feels like “your business” anymore. The people who make up the face of the company are different. The technology learning curve was a steep one. If you switched to remote working, perhaps the personal interaction and the quiet time during your commute is missed.

As we prepare to finish the year with Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s Eve—will we truly enter into this time with thanks-giving? Do we still acknowledge the true reasons to be grateful?

When looking at the calendar, something interesting that stood out to me was the lesser-known dates and celebrations.

For example, did you know that December 13th is National Cocoa Day or that December 17th is National Maple Syrup Day? Or maybe you know that after Thanksgiving comes Black Friday and Cyber Monday, but what about Giving Tuesday? Also, here’s a fun fact: Thanksgiving falls on November 26th, which also happens to be National Cake Day and the National Day of Mourning. So you could “eat your cake” and cry too without judgment (talk about cheap therapy)! The point is, we tend to overlook the smaller celebrations because we are so focused on the big ones. Why not look for ways to appreciate the everyday moments? Children are great at getting us to put the responsibilities on pause—just for a moment—and join their “just because” parties. Maybe it’s the practice of being grateful for the smaller things that help us weather the bigger and harder things. Just maybe.

Although 2020 has had many unique markers, just like every year, we start with the vision and end with perspective.

When evaluating the performance of your business this year, remember success is in the eye of the beholder. Consider measuring the bottom line of your professional and personal life with these thoughts:

Did I learn new programs or skill sets that have helped my company to adapt?

Did I grow in the area of patience?

Did I get to spend more quality time with my family this year?

Did I thrive in my faith during challenging times?

Did my family survive under tremendous stressors?

Did I give or receive love, even when it was a hard choice?

If you can say yes to any of the above, you are blessed. So take a deep breath, count your blessings, and finish strong. We are still in this together.

P.S. Other essential dates on the On Point calendar are

Small Business Saturday (11/28), and of course, our annual Holiday Vendor Showcase (12/5). Click herefor more information—we’d love to see you there!
