Beware Shiny Object Syndrome

November 25, 2015

Odds are if you follow a lot of online business gurus you have heard of shiny object syndrome at least once. But if you haven’t, you need to know what it is, how it can cripple your business and how to avoid it.

What Is Shiny Object Syndrome?

Shiny Object Syndrome (Objectivius Shinium Syndromus) is defined as the attraction to objects that exhibit a glassy, polished, gleaming or otherwise shiny appearance. Something as simple as a reflection in your peripheral vision may easily distract your attention. Over time, you’ll find that your attention to said object is directly correlated to it’s shininess and your attention fades as the shininess wears off.

In business, shiny object syndrome is the inability to stay focused on one thing and to constantly be looking to something new to sell or feature in your business. An example of this would be deciding that you want to open a business that provides web writing services and then thinking maybe you should do public relations instead, but after hearing about a gal that runs an incredibly successful advertising company you decide you’ll write advertisements and jingles instead. Before you even gave the first business idea a chance to take root you changed your business twice. Do you see how this can be devastating to your bottom line?

Now that you know what it is and how dangerous it can be, how can you avoid shiny object syndrome? In a sense you need to put some blinders on. Get laser focused on what you want to do, how you want to do and what your end goal is. Then, once you have these decisions made, move towards the end goal. If you feel yourself beginning to drift from your path immediately think to yourself, “Will this deter me from the finish line?” “Is this what my current customers want/need?” “Am I trying to do too many things at once?” If you’re noticing red flags gently guide yourself back to your main focus. Only after your current path comes to a road block should you look for a way around it. If everything is running smoothly though, why fix what isn’t broken?
