Go green with plants around the office

March 20, 2015

Indoor plants come in many varieties: flowers, vines, shrubs, cacti and even trees. Some thrive in copious sunlight while others survive with little water and maintenance. At On Point Executive Center, we believe plants are one of the best ways to brighten an office and increase visual appeal.

Here are some of the major benefits of keeping plants at work:

Aesthetics. Not to state the obvious, but plants are beautiful. Fresh greenery, colorful blooms and elegant structures make them a perfect design element to impress business partners and keep your employees happy. Plants can complement other design features that make your office unique, adding interest to window frames or communal workspaces. Hanging plants can emphasize vaulted ceilings and cut flowers can become the focal point of an entryway.

De-stressing. Helen Russell of Surrey University in the U.K. conducted a study that linked the proliferation of indoor plants with decreased levels of anxiety while workers perform tasks.

"In the study, Russell asked participants to take a difficult test in a room filled with plants, and compared their skin conductivity, heart rate and blood pressure with people who completed the same test without plants," explains the Earth 911 blog. "Overall, Russell's findings showed that plants eased stress for participants by at least this metric, and that participants recovered from stress more quickly in a plant-heavy environment."

Continuity. Some indoor plants can live decades, so investing in sturdy varieties that can weather the changes and transitions in your company is a nice symbolic touch.

Air quality. For offices with stale or lifelessly climate-controlled air, plants can provide moisture and produce oxygen.
