Florida business owners struggle to find the right work-life balance
Millions of Americans travel to Florida every year to enjoy the beautiful beaches, world class attractions and festive culture of the Sunshine State. However, as a new survey from BMO Harris Bank has found, Florida business owners struggle to find time to enjoy their home state.
The survey found that more than three-quarters, 76 percent, of Florida business owners and executives check their work emails while on vacation.
"We have become dependent on the instant access provided by our smartphones and tablets to keep us connected to our businesses 24/7," explained managing director of BMO Harris Bank, Dave Maraman, to the Tampa Bay Business Journal. "While these technologies have increased business productivity, the flip side is that same instant access makes it difficult to disconnect during our planned 'down time.'"
The survey also found that 68 percent of Florida business owners described themselves as "workaholics." While this may speak to the dedication of Florida's workforce, it also could spell trouble if the state's business owners don't find the appropriate work-life balance.
Professional burnout is the result when owners work themselves into exhaustion. According to the Mayo Clinic, burnout can result in a negative spillover into personal relationships or home life, as well as a variety of health concerns, such as anxiety, insomnia, fatigue and increased vulnerability to illness.
