On days when you aren’t at the virtual office meeting clients, staying focused at your desk when you work remotely can be difficult. While it is great to work out of a home office, it can also be isolating. There’s no one present to hold you accountable except yourself, especially when your “coworkers” are the people you live with.
Here are five tips for staying engaged from home.
1. Leave water and snacks at your desk
If you’re finding yourself getting up constantly just to run to the kitchen to get a glass of water or a handful of chips, keep some within arms reach. This will limit your reasons for getting up from your desk. Just make sure they’re healthy snacks!
2. Set “office hours” for yourself
Sure, your virtual assistant might take calls from the office from 8-5, but are you actually working those hours? You don’t have to be. Set the hours that work best for you, even if they might be unconventional. Some work, like writing, needs to have a consistent routine of sitting down to write. With other businesses, you might find yourself sitting and doing little because you might not have the motivation at 8am, but a fluctuating schedule works wonders.
3. Remove distractions
This might seem like a given, but… how many desk knick knacks and family photos do you really need when you work from home? Remove all the things you find yourself focused on instead of actually doing work. It’s important to have an inspiring space, but limit yourself to the number of objects within sight. And if you have kids running around… they can be a distraction too. It can be important to designate a space to working, even if it’s not a whole office– just make sure the whole family knows it.
4. Dress for Success
One of the great things about working from home is the fact you can show up to the “office” in anything you want– or nothing at all. But if you’re slacking off in pajamas, it may be time to throw on some slacks! They say you should dress for the job you want, but when you have your dream job, that may be a little difficult. Maybe it’s time to revert back to the office mentality of showing up professionally dressed.
5. Delegate and Prioritize
Sort through your tasks to find what would create the most impact on your business, your customers, and even your work ethic. If you find yourself dreading certain actions, delegate! Besides virtual assistant and receptionist services, there are plenty of other services that can be delegated to the appropriate office to professionals who not only are experienced, but they want to do it for you. Leave yourself free to do the actions that will keep you engaged at all times.
Take full advantage of the luxury of working virtually without compromising the job!
