Virtual Business Lessons From Chewbacca Mom

August 4, 2016

Unless you have been living under a rock for the last few weeks, you’ve likely heard the story of Candace Payne, aka Chewbacca Mom. If however you have not heard the story, the short version is that Candace Payne bought herself a Chewbacca mask for her birthday. Then, excited as she was about the purchase, she ran to her car and unboxed it on Facebook Live for her friends.

What happened next? She laughed herself silly over the purchase and the mask’s hilarious sound effects on live video. The video’s humor was contagious. So contagious in fact that Chewbacca began trending on Twitter, sales of the mask skyrocketed and the video itself was viewed more than 150 MILLION times on Facebook.* What’s so wonderful about this video is that it spread laughter to the masses, and if you paid attention to it like we did, you picked up some fabulous virtual business lessons from it. In case you didn’t notice them because you were too busy laughing, read on to see what we considered the best business, if not life lessons from Chewbacca Mom:

She didn’t wait until the conditions were perfect: Too often in business people want everything to be perfect. Then, because it can’t ever really be perfect they drag their feet and never launch their business. If you have something worth selling, just launch! You can always perfect your methods, your website, even your entire business later.

She was authentic: You can tell from the video that Candace was genuinely happy. She was herself and simply had a blast sharing something that brought her joy. Be authentic and share your awesome business from a place of happiness rather than from an intention of solely making money.

She showed up: Candace could have easily just laughed to herself, then taken the mask home and had some laughs with her family. Instead, she showed up and shared it with all of her friends. Sure, she likely had no clue it would go viral, but rather than just sharing with a few she chose to share her fun with at least all of her Facebook friends. Are you showing up in your business with your gifts or hiding them for just a few to see?

She enjoyed the moment: Chewbacca mom stated she had something exciting to share, she shared it and then enjoyed the moment. Too often in our virtual businesses we just move through the day to day motions forgetting to enjoy the simple pleasures of the fact we get to have these businesses. Remember, every day is a gift, that’s why they call it the present!

Watch the video here if you haven’t seen it, or if you just need another laugh!
