Snapping out of the Procrastination Rut

July 17, 2015

Procrastination is an ugly beast. It can cost you time, money and in the worst of cases ruin your reputation. How can you kill the beast of procrastination?

First, determine why you are procrastinating in the first place? Is it that you are simply overwhelmed? Do you fear that you will fail? Perhaps it’s that you are bored with your business? Really think about what it is that is causing you to procrastinate because it’s not until you figure out the why that you can fix anything.

If it’s overwhelm – Break down the tasks at hand into more manageable assignments. Another thing that can help with overwhelm is re-organizing your work space. If you constantly find yourself looking for supplies and files it adds unnecessary stress. Also pass off tasks you simple can’t handle. There is nothing wrong with getting help when you need it.

If it’s fear of failure – It’s hard to swallow the fact that you might fail, but here’s a truth bomb for you- you will fail 100% of the times you don’t try. The good news is if you do try it could be a runaway success. Let that possibility fuel you! Fear is the number one thing that keeps people from reaching their goals. Ponder this truth… The opposite of ‘fear’ is FAITH. It is impossible to commit to both at the same time. The next time you fear failure, do a complete 180 in your brain and choose FAITH.

If it’s boredom – Figure out what is it that is boring you? The common advice is that when your business stops being fun it’s time to quit, but maybe the real advice should be when your business stops being fun it’s time to change. What would re-ignite the passion in your business? Would giving certain tasks to a virtual assistant help? Maybe you simply need to think about why you started your business in the first place and keep it in mind in the day to day grind. There may be a plethora of ways to enjoy your business again if you just take the time to think about it. Then again, it could be time to change the business completely! Soul searching and getting clear on the end goal can often help with that.
