On Point’s Mark and Karen Gillman Donate Car to Charity
Mark and Karen Gillman, owners of On Point Executive Center donated their car to local charity Wheels of Success. The mission of the company is to provide “personal transportation solutions by partnering with the community in a circle of support to keep people working and sustain their independence.” In other words, they “help families obtain or continue work by providing them with reliable transportation through a program of car repairs, vehicle replacement, related licensing services, car payments, down payments and car-care classes in both Hillsborough, Pinellas and Pasco counties.”
Karen had this to say about the donation of their car to this cause: “I met Susan Jacobs, founder and CEO of Wheels of Success a few years back and knew right away that we wanted to donate to her charity. When the time came for us to upgrade one of our older cars we decided we would rather help another family instead of taking it’s trade in value towards a newer car.”
The car Mark and Karen donated went to a lady named Chelsea. Chelsea is a mother of a three-year old who is balancing a full-time job as an administrative assistant while enrolled in the pharmacy program at St. Petersburg College. After escaping an abusive relationship, Chelsea’s car was repossessed. She lost everything including her and her son’s clothing, when the repossession company disposed of her belongings before she could get to the company’s lot. Thereafter, Chelsea used the early bus to take her son to day care then took a second bus and walked to work. Thanks to the Gilmans, Chelsea can now spend more time with her son and studies since receiving a “new to her” 1997 Toyota Camry.
Director of Operations at Wheels of Success Barbara Uberoi said, “Wheels would not have been able to help Chelsea had it not been for Karen’s [and Mark’s] donation of their car and funding provided by ‘Build-A-Car’ funding from The Saunder’s Foundation whose mission is to support education. The Saunder’s Foundation provided funding to replace the Camry’s struts, brake pads and rotors, engine cooling fans, water pump, window regulators, door handle and belts. The funding also covered a complete tune-up and oil change. AAA provided Chelsea with a basic membership to ensure she would not be stranded. Without vehicle donors and funders, Wheels of Success would not be able to keep placing families on the ‘road to success.’”
