How To Hire The Perfect Virtual Employee

September 8, 2016

Anyone with experience can tell you that hiring a virtual employee isn’t an overnight process. There’s a lot of work that goes in to it, from figuring out if they’re the right fit for you, to the training it will take to get them completely on board. If you’re a virtual business owner ready to start outsourcing some tasks, it’s time to hone in on the steps you’ll need to take to hire the perfect virtual employee.

Step 1: Start the application process

You should be looking for someone that has experience in the tasks you need done. You can create a simple job application with Google Docs like this one. Get a resume and a cover letter and you can begin the process of going through them to see who you want to interview, which brings us to step 2…

Step 2: Interview

Make sure that your potential virtual employee will fit in with your virtual office culture. No, they won’t physically be in the office, but they should share your company values and have a personality that will mesh well with you and the rest of your staff if you have additional team members already. Make it a point to set up an interview that gives you the opportunity to interact face-to face and in real time via something like Skype. This is also a good time to test their ‘virtual’ communication skills.

Step 3: Check References

Now that you’ve established what their work ethic is and know more about their personality, you should check their references. This should only help to verify what you already believe to be true. Did this individual respond to requests in a timely manner? Where they able to handle strenuous or sudden deadlines? Did their passion come across in their work? You get the idea…

Step 4: On-Boarding Process

It’s time to train your new employee and allow them to become more familiar with what they’ll be doing. Start with simple tasks and deadlines explaining your expectations. During this step you should remain available for questions as you slowly hand over the reigns for them to handle things on their own. After about 2 weeks to a month you should have a good idea of whether or not they will work for you or if it’s time to start over with step 1.
