Business Tips From the Pros

April 28, 2015

Here at On Point Executive Center we’re always interested in learning what sets the successful businesses apart from those that don’t do as well. In an effort to dig a little deeper into what makes a business a success we scoured the web for a few business tips from pros who own businesses that not only make lots of money, but also show no signs of slowing down anytime soon.

Realize it’s not about the money

“At a relatively early age, I began to believe that building a business was perhaps the greatest opportunity for making an impact, because it’s a tool for making a change in the world.”

Elizabeth Holmes, Founder of Theranos and the world’s youngest self-made billionaire

Tell it like it is

“You don’t have to be right or have all the answers. You’ve got to be able to tell people what’s happening — good, bad, or ugly. Then others can help solve the problem.”

Bert and John Jacobs, Life is Good

Failure could be a signal for change

“I think failure is nothing more than life’s way of nudging you that you are off course. My attitude to failure is not attached to outcome, but in not trying. It is liberating. Most people attach failure to something not working out or how people perceive you. This way, it is about answering to yourself.”

Sara Blakely, Spanx

But remember…

“Everything in our lives – without exception – is either a blessing or a blessing in disguise.”

-Joel Fotinus

Stand out to get your customer’s attention

“I wanted to stand out from everybody else selling [on Etsy]. I wanted to be unique and I wanted to be the photo that they clicked on when they searched for headbands or cute scarves and that was how we started growing and I really started seeing the need for basic accessories and the ability to grow this into more than just something for me to pay for dance lessons for my daughter…”

Alicia Shaffer, Three Bird Nest and the top seller for 2014 on Etsy

Never stop looking at where you can improve

“I still work hard to know my business. I’m continuously looking for ways to improve all my companies, and I’m always selling. Always.”

Mark Cuban, owns several businesses and is a “Shark” investor on Shark Tank
